Backpacking- Personal Gear

This is a rough guide to necessary and recommended personal gear for a backpackingĀ trip. Keep in mind- only bring what you can carry! Ask your trip leader for more information and details.


  • Bring non-cotton (wool, polyester, etc) clothing that can be worn in layers
    • Recommendations: Something to sleep in, hiking pants, running clothes, underwear, and an insulating layer (fleece)
  • Socks (at least 2 pair)
  • Raingear (Pants and Jacket)
  • Footwear (Boots and camp flip-flops)
  • Hat and Gloves
  • Sunglasses

Camping Gear

  • Dry bags
    • It may be a good idea to keep clothing (and other things you want to keep dry) organized in dry bags within your pack
  • Headlamp or Flashlight
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Food kit (Plate or bowl, mug, knife, spoon, fork)
  • Water Bottle(s) or bladder (enough to carry at least 2L)

Personal Items

  • Personal Toiletries
    • Specific recommendations: wet wipes and baby powder
  • Camera
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Cash
  • Health Insurance Card
  • Drivers License
