Uploading photos to the Outing Club gallery can be fun and easy, once you get the hang of a couple of things. In a
nutshell, you'll need to reduce the size of your photos before uploading them and then use one of two methods for getting them
up here. You'll need an Outing Club login (emailed to you when you signed up for the club) to upload photos. If there isn't
already an album for your trip's photos here, you'll need to email the
Technology Chair to get permission for adding albums
(this is only to discourage people from creating an excessive number of albums). There are a number of programs which will
reduce the size of photos for you. These instructions recommend Picasa simply because it
is free and easy to use. This is a PC-only program though, so Mac, Linux, or other operating system users will need to find a different
program. When you're in Picasa, you'll need to import photos so they'll show up in your Picasa library. Afterward, reduce their
size as follows:
Reducing Photo Size with Picasa
1. Click on the folder where your images are stored on the left-hand menu.
2. Click and drag to select the photos that you'd like to reduce in size.
3. Click on the "Export" button in the bottom right-hand corner of the Picasa window.
4. A dialog box should now popup with options for the exported photos. Under "Location of exported",
make sure to note where the photos are going so you can find them later. You might want to give the
folder a new name under "Name of exported folder" so you can distinguish the original photos from the smaller ones.
5. The main options to pay attention to appear under "Image Size Options". Make sure "Resize to" is selected and
set the size and quality you'd like. A good size for the Outing Club website is 800 pixels with a quality
of 80%. If your photos still come out too big, you can reduce the quality a bit more.
6. Now that the photos are reduced in size and ready to put on the site, you can close Picasa and open a web browser
to the Outing Club website (www.hooferouting.org).
If a photo album is already created (like it is for "Delta Lodge 2006"), you can upload photos using either the
"Upload multiple photos" or "Upload individual photos". If you only have a few to upload, the individual option
is usually easiest. If you're uploading more than that though, the multiple option can be a real time-saver.
Uploading Multiple Photos
1. To upload items using the "Upload multiple photos" option, click on the link for it and wait a few seconds for
the upload application to load. You should see a mini window on the page with a "Add Files" button. Click on
the "Add Files" button.
2. In the dialog box that pops up, browse to where your photos were exported from Picasa. Then select the folder of
photos. Make sure to select the folder and not individual photos!
3. Click "Add files"
4. Click "Upload Files"
5. After the files have finished uploading, click the refresh or reload button in your browser toolbar.
6. After refreshing the page, the folder you uploaded should show up in the list of "Search new pictures". Click
on the folder link.
7. In the dropdown menu that says "Put pictures of...", select the album where you want your photos to go
(e.g., "Delta Lodge 2006").
8. In the list below, you can double-check the photos that are being added to the album, in case there are
any that don't belong.
9. Click "Insert selected pictures"
10. Your photos will now be added to the album. For each photo you should see a green icon appear to the
right after it's successfully added.
Uploading Individual Photos
1. Click on the "Upload individual photos" link.
2. For the "Album" dropdown menu, select where you want to put your photos (e.g., "Delta Lodge 2006")
3. Click the "Browse" button to find the picture you want to upload. It will be in the folder you selected in Picasa,
if that's what you used to reduce the size of your photos.
4. For picture title, think about giving it a title that describes what's in the picture. Peoples names are good
here! Something like "John, Jane, and Sam taking a break from skiing at Valhalla" would be great.
5. You can optionally enter a more complete description and keywords below, but these are completely optional and
not currently in use.
6. Click the "Submit" button.
All Done!
You can check to make sure your photos show up by clicking on "Album list" (in the top menu) and browsing to the album.
For example, for Delta Lodge 2006, you'd go to "Cross-country Skiing" and then "Delta Lodge 2006". If you have any
trouble, email the Technology Chair.
