Leading Trips in the Hoofer Outing Club

One of the greatest benefits of membership in the Outing Club is the chance for you to lead trips of your own design with Outing Club equipment and the assistance of experienced leaders. All trips in the Outing Club are lead by volunteer members who simply make a plan to lead a trip, announce it via a number of methods to the group, and then accept trip participants with a trip limit and signup method of their choosing. Any member can lead a trip. The only restrictions are that the trip leader abide by the rules of the particular activity and that the trip consist of at least three participants. An "Introduction to Leadership" class is offered periodically to highlight resources available to trip leaders and tips for leading a smooth trip.

  • Steps to leading an Outing Club trip
(Some of these steps are optional or depend on the type of trip you're leading. If you're unsure, ask questions by email or at a meeting!)
  1. Suggest your trip idea to the appropriate Activity Chair or ask them for trip suggestions.
  2. If necessary, obtain leader ratings or training (for climbing and boating activities).
  3. Announce your trip via the website calendar, email list, or at a weekly meeting. Announcing it with all three methods is best (and helps ensure good trip participation)!
  4. Accept signups for your trip via the method you specifiy (email or trip signup sheet).
  5. Fill out and submit a trip plan form (or river trip sheet for boating trips).
  6. Lead your trip. Have fun!
  7. Report on your trip at the next weekly meeting. Upload pictures to the website. Consider adding your trip plan to the wiki so that leaders in the future can duplicate your trip.
