Directions from Madison to Hooferland

Approximate driving time: 4 hours

Approximate driving distance: 200 miles

General Info:

Hooferland is a few acres of undeveloped land owned by the Hoofer Outing Club about 20 miles from Lakewood, WI. The land is centrally located near several northern WI rivers (Peshtigo, Pike, Wolf Sec 3). It has a number of clearings for tents, a firepit, and an outhouse.

Directions:

  • Leave Madison going NORTH on HW 151 (East Washington Ave). Drive about 65 miles on HW 151.
  • Exit on HW 26 NORTH towards Rosendale (Note: this is the second 26 exit -- be sure not to take the first 26 exit, which heads south). Take HW 26 about 25 miles north to HW 41.
  • Take the cloverleaf ramp onto HW 41 NORTH (LEFT) towards Oshkosh/Appleton/Green Bay. Follow HW 41 for about 25 miles until you see HW 47.
  • Take HW 47 all the way to Bonduel (it turns into 117 North). Follow 117 4 miles north out of Bonduel until it runs into HW 22 at Cecil.
  • Turn RIGHT (EAST) on HW 22-N. Follow HW 22 for about half a mile.
  • Look for County Road R and turn LEFT (NORTH) onto it. Take County Road R NORTH for about 15 miles until it ends at County Road M.
  • Turn RIGHT (EAST) on M, and drive about 1.5 miles to HW 32.
  • Turn LEFT (NORTH), on HW 32. Take HW 32 for about 25 miles into the town of Lakewood. In Lakewood look for the gas station (BP?) on the right as you enter town and shortly after the gas station will be County Road F.
  • Turn RIGHT onto County Rd F. Take F 13 miles north and east until County Road F turns into County C East. County C West is a left turn at this intersection.
  • Turn LEFT onto County C West at the intersection and drive NORTHWEST on C about 1 mile. Look for the 2nd right turn (the first is Farm Dam road, the put-in for the Peshtigo River ). About 500 yards after Farm Dam road is Old J.
  • Turn RIGHT (EAST) on Old J (be careful - if you drive too far on C (like 2 miles more) you run into Old J again - it's a sideways U shape).
  • Just over exactly one mile after the right turn onto Old J is the entrance to Hooferland. It's on the left, and there's a little (broken) reflector. It's pretty hard to see, it's a grassy driveway. There's a left curve sign just before it. If you curve to your left and see a transformer substation on your right, you've overshot it by about 50 yards.
