Directions from Madison to the Red River

Approximate driving time: 2.5 hours

Approximate driving distance: 180 miles

Latitude/longitude: 44.8414879,-88.7612381

General Info:

The Red River is approximately 1 mile SE of Gresham, WI. It is a 4-mile stretch and the river has dam releases that bring the water level up dramatically. Without a release, the river can be very shallow and most of the play spots disappear. There are 4 named drops on the Red: First Drop (Class I-II), Double Drop (Class I), Monastery Falls (Class III), and Ziemer’s (Class II+). For more information check the American Whitewater link.

Directions:

  • Leave Madison going NORTH on HW 151 (East Washington Ave). Drive about 65 miles on HW 151.
  • Exit on HW 26 NORTH towards Rosendale (Note: this is the second 26 exit -- be sure not to take the first 26 exit, which heads south). Take HW 26 about 25 miles north to HW 41.
  • Take the cloverleaf ramp onto HW 41 NORTH towards Oshkosh/Appleton/Green Bay. Follow HW 41 for about 25 miles until you see HW 47.
  • Take the HW 47 NORTH toward Shawano for about 30 miles.
  • Merge onto HW 29 WEST via the ramp on the LEFT. Follow HW 29 for about 8 miles.
  • Take County Road U NORTH (RIGHT) and continue north on County Road A (Highview Rd) when the road curves left (it curves left and you have to take an immediate RIGHT after the curve to get on Highview).
  • Highview hits Cherry Rd , take a right on Cherry Rd (Note: if you’re looking at the Gazeteer, instead of Cherry Rd it might be labeled as Shabow Rd ).
  • After about .8 miles take a LEFT on Lower Lake Rd.
  • Go down Lower Lake Rd and just when you pass the dam (on your left) you can make a RIGHT turn down a dirt ramp to the put-in area.
