Directions from Madison to the Wolf River,
Section 4

Approximate driving time: 3.5 hours

Aproximate driving distance: 170 miles

Latitude/Longitude:  45.0605927,-88.627182

General Info:

Section 4 of the Wolf River is on the Menomenee Reservation and there is a fee (about $25) for paddling this section. When you pay for the permit, you will get an arm band which should be worn at all times. If you are caught without the band, the Warden can fine you and demand that you leave the river. Section 4 is an intermediate/advanced river with several Class III rapids. Even at low water levels (250 cfs) the play spots are fun. The 6 rapids on this section are: Sullivan Falls (Class III), Upper Ducknest (Class II+), Lower Ducknest (Class II+), Upper Dells (Class II+), Lower Dells (Class III), and Big Smoky Falls (Class III). For more information check the American Whitewater link.

Directions:

  • Leave Madison going NORTH on HW 151 (East Washington Ave). Drive about 65 miles on HW 151.
  • Exit on HW 26 NORTH towards Rosendale (Note: this is the second 26 exit -- be sure not to take the first 26 exit, which heads south). Take HW 26 about 25 miles north to HW 41.
  • Take HW 41 NORTH past Oshkosh and Appleton until you see HW 47 (about 25 miles).
  • Take HW 47 (Richmond St) NORTH and follow it for about 30 miles.
  • Turn LEFT (WEST) onto HW 29 and follow it for 8 miles.
  • Turn RIGHT onto HW 22 and follow it for 2 miles.
  • Turn RIGHT onto HW 55/47 heading NORTH toward the Menominee Reservation and follow it into the reservation. Shortly after Keshena, HW 55 splits from HW 47.
  • Turn RIGHT onto HW 55 and follow it for 13.5 miles. You will see a sign for Big Smokey Rafts. Take a LEFT turn after the sign (at Big Smokey Rafts, NOT Shotgun Eddy). When you get towards the parking areas, the road forks. Take the LEFT branch which takes you to the lower section of the parking area with the raft storage area and changing rooms.
