Camping, hiking, boating, and the best free music festival ever. I will be leading a trip to the High Cliff state park on Lake Winnebago during the same time period as the annual Mile of Music festival in nearby Appleton Wi.  August 1st - August  4th, 2024. We have a group campsite reserved for 3 nights and 4 days. The plan would be to sea kayak on Lake Winnebago or the nearby Fox river in the mornings and early afternoons and then go the Mile of Music fest. The music fest is along a one-mile stretch of College Ave. This year’s event will have over 200 original artists playing at 40 different venues and over 700 sets over the 4 days. Music included 19 genres from Alternative to Folk, Bluegrass, Soul, Punk and Pop-Rock etc.

The event highlights homegrown talent and the best emerging artists from all over the U.S. and even internationally. Come for all 4 days or part of the weekend. The cost for the campsite and gas will be shared and will be based on participation. Payment will be Venmo.  Anyone is welcome to join the trip. Kayakers will need a sko or better rating or may be able to get a lesson on the trip depending upon weather conditions. More detail will follow as we get closer.

Come to a beginner/advanced beginner whitewater kayak trip on the Baraboo River! If you have your R0 lake rating for a whitewater kayak you are ready to go.

We will paddle a moving current (thrilling) and practice T-rescues and wet exits (character-building). We'll spot eddies/safe zones on the river, avoid obstacles, hit features, and enjoy a true whitewater kayak experience!

Come out and enjoy an afternoon of paddling on Lake Mendota, the plan is to paddle from the Terrace to James Madison Beach. This will be a great opportunity to either earn your SK1 rating or practice your SK1 skills. 

Here are the skills/items we will be teaching/practicing/reviewing 

• Bracing
• Self-Rescue (deck scramble, heel hook, and re-entry roll) 
• How to use a paddle float, bilge pump, and bilge sponge
• Additional T-Rescue practice
• Function and use of a skeg
• Beach Launches/Landings 

Plan to get wet, plan to protect yourself from the sun, and please bring plenty of water and snacks to fuel a good time paddling. 

ELIGIBILITY:  

Participants must have their Sea Kayak Orientation rating. 

Participants need to be a current member of the Hoofer Outing Club.

WHAT TO BRING: 

• You must wear shoes that have a sole and will not fall off in the water. There are Zebra Mussels in the lake, and their shells are very sharp. I know of several instances where people have cut their feet in the lake outside the Union. 
• Wear clothing that can get wet. We are definitely going to be completely immersed in the water. We will be swimming.  
• Bring a glasses strap if you wear glasses 
• Bring a full change of clothing, including dry shoes, and a towel. There are showers inside of the Union building. 
• A water bottle is required

WHERE TO MEET: 

Please meet at the outer entrance to the Outdoor UW boathouse in the lower level of Memorial Union. It's a large garage door facing the lake, where the canoes and kayaks are kept. Please be there and ready to start at 12:30pm. 

A swim test is not required to participate in this lesson but it is required to earn your SK1, we will be administering swim tests at the end of the lesson.

Tuesday August 6 Sea Kayak (Milwaukee) on Lake Michigan

I may lead a small group (3-4) to paddle at South Shore, Milwaukee on Tuesday August 6, 2024. This will be a chance to paddle on Lake Michigan in a relatively protected environment. There is a breakwall so that paddlers do not have to go into the waves if they don't want to.

And when there aren’t waves it is a beautiful place to paddle. (Did you know you can see the Milwaukee Art Museum *and* the FBI from the water?) I can demonstrate some new rescues or towing. You may also meet new paddlers outside of Hoofers. This is for experienced SK1/SK2p and up. (Make sure you get to the boathouse and practice your skills and stamina this summer!) Participation is at my discretion. *Standard swim test is required.* You should be comfortable with the idea of paddling a large body of water and the thought of getting into some waves (~2 feet). Priority will be for student members who demonstrate an earnest commitment to grow, to teach, to lead, and to serve others in the Hoofers community!

You should have stamina to paddle for about 5 hours. I will be checking w/ paddlers to get an idea of experience.

You will need a lunch in a dry bag, 2 L water, and plenty of snacks in a dry bag. You will be thirsty and hungry! Please bring some cash for gas and food thereafter. Given the water temperatures (~64 degrees Fahrenheit), a wetsuit is required for this trip. Helmets, paddle float, life jacket, bilge pump, etc…are required as they would be for any sea kayak trip.

We will launch at 11am from South Shore Harbor in Milwaukee. We will meet at 8:00am, and we will leave Madison no later than 9:00am. (It’s about a 1.5 hour drive to Milwaukee.) We will load the boats/gear efficiently to maximize our paddling time. This will be a day of refining skills, and hopefully bigger conditions.

(Please Note: Depending on conditions, I may elect to proceed to Milwaukee. That is the primary goal. Depending on the ultimate forecast and group, I may also elect to paddle locally on Lake Mendota.)

Are you interested in exploring all four lakes of Madison - Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, and Kegonsa - and camping out of a sea kayak? The Ho-Chunk people (Indigenous tribes) lived here for nearly 12,000 years before the arrival of white settlers and named this beautiful area “Dejope”, which translates to “Four Lakes”.

We are organizing a two-day paddling trip over the weekend with an overnight stay at a campsite at Lake Kegonsa. We plan to start early on Saturday and paddle with sea kayaks from the Terrace down the Yahara River to explore and paddle through the beautiful four lakes region.

It is almost exactly 18 miles (a full day of paddling and approximately 9 hours each day) from the Terrace to Kegonsa and the route will take us through Lake Mendota, the Tenney Locks, the Yahara River, Lake Monona, Upper Mud Lake, Lake Waubesa, Lower Mud Lake, and then Lake Kegnonsa. We will join the group camp at Lake Kegonsa State Park, have an awesome dinner together, and spend the night there with a wonderful campfire and smores. On Sunday, we will paddle the 18 miles back to the Terrace.

This sign-up will be for those who want to paddle a sea kayak from the terrace to the campsite. This trip will allow you to work on intermediate sea kayaking skills to add to your repertoire and contribute toward an SK2 or SK2P rating.

We will also have a pre-paddle day to prepare ourselves for the long paddle of the weekend, so please watch out for those. Since this trip will include two long days of kayaking while carrying gear, participants will need to complete a pre-paddle with at least one of the leaders.

P.S.: Another fun thing to note – the night of August 10th is one of the nights that the Perseid meteor shower will be happening so hopefully we will see some cool meteors!

Cost of the trip is roughly 400$.
Join us as we paddle and camp for 7 days and 6 nights on the lakes and rivers of Turtle River/White Otter Lake Provincial Park.

The scenery is comparable to that of the better-known Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico Provincial Park which are located just to the south (think clear water, rocky cliffs, boreal forest). However, we’ll see far fewer people and as an added bonus, we’ll get to run a river section with class I to class II rapids. Other highlights include excellent fishing (primarily smallmouth bass), picking wild blueberries, and viewing historical sites (e.g. native pictographs and the very impressive White Otter Castle (a 4-story log mansion built by a hermit in the early 1900’s)).

Camping will be “primitive”, i.e. campsites are not marked and there are no facilities of any kind.

To go on this trip, you’ll need the following:

• R1 -OC rating. You can sign up for the trip having only a Canoe Orientation/Lake Rating, but you will need to get your R1-OC rating prior to the trip.
• U.S. citizens need a valid passport or passport card for travel to/from Canada. Note, current processing times are 6-8 weeks (2-3 weeks for expedited processing) if you need to get a passport or passport card. Non-U.S. citizens will need to research on their own what the requirements are for travel to/from Canada.
• Under Canada’s immigration law, if you have committed or been convicted of a crime, you may not be allowed into Canada. This includes both minor and serious crimes, such as: theft, assault, manslaughter, dangerous driving, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and possession of or trafficking in drugs or controlled substances. Note, you don’t have to have been convicted to be denied entry, because they don’t want people fleeing to Canada in order to avoid prosecution in the U.S.
• Health/fitness level sufficient to portage a canoe or 40lb pack over uneven terrain. Our route will have 10 portages.

The trip is limited to 5 participants (plus the 3 trip leaders).

Swim - Kayak

Kayaks are stationed along the swim course to serve as directional guides for athletes and for safety purposes. Kayaks are often the first responder to an athlete in need of assistance so you must be confident in your ability to keep your kayak upright if an athlete needs to hold on to your boat. If an athlete is in need of further assistance or rescue the kayaker will signal for lifeguards stationed along the course on boats or Jet Ski. You must have your own kayak. Sea or Touring style kayaks are preferred due to their inherent built in flotation.

You will receive a survey from the Kayak Captain to gauge your experience and skill level. Based on your responses the Kayak Captain will determine your position and role on the course.

About two weeks prior to the race, you will be sent training information on how to provide effective kayak support. All swim volunteers are required to attend ONE of two Swim Volunteer Meetings via Zoom.

Kayak/SUP Volunteer Zoom: Tuesday September 3rd at 6:00pm or Thursday September 5th at 6:00pm

Pre-race overnight storage for kayaks is available to make race morning easier.


Requirements include:

October Sea Kayak Rough Water Training & ACA Skills/Instructor Development - Lake Superior

Dates October (3) 4-7, 2024

(The training begins on Friday morning October 4 and concludes on Monday afternoon on October 7. Travel to arrive in Washburn WI on Thursday night. Return to Madison on Monday night.)

There is an option to choose to attend part or all of the weekend.

Leaders: ACA Instructor Trainers and a few other ACA Instructors will be leading this specific weekend.

My goal is to develop skilled paddlers, instructors, and leaders.

This rough water sea kayaking event is for capable paddlers looking to advance their knowledge/skills of navigation, weather, wind, and waves to safely develop in more challenging coastal and open water environments. Points of emphasis will include adapting paddling skills to rough water conditions, safety/rescue skills, group leadership, and risk management.

Paddlers will benefit from expert ACA training on Lake Superior between the Bayfield Peninsula of Wisconsin and the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan. Venues include the Apostle Islands National Shoreline (including the Meyer's Beach Sea Caves), Porcupine Mountain State Park, and Black River Harbor. Each day will include an integration of classroom didactic instruction with on water training in conditions on Lake Superior.

Who: Ideally, SK2p/SK2 rating and recent paddling in rough conditions. Standard swim test required. A strong SK1 with whitewater experience may also be possible. If you are sincerely interested, available for the specific dates, and are aware of the rough/cold conditions involved, feel free to contact me. (If you are solidly moving towards the SK2 and are interested (but not quite there yet), we can discuss on a case by case basis. I would be happy to discuss my previous experiences with you.)

Boats/Gear: Most of the needed boats and gear can be made available through the club and/or through our local host in Washburn WI. Please email me directly to make arrangements. Wearing wetsuits with synthetic underlayers (your own), paddling jacket, helmet, and other essential personal paddling gear of pfd, spray skirt are required.

Personal Gear: Synthetic under-layers (no cotton), paddling gloves/pogies, thermal cap. A drysuit is strongly recommended. For a drysuit, I would highly recommend that you contact Kayak Academy and arrange to have a rental dry suit. (Details below.)
