If you anticipate using a FLEET/DOA VEHICLE to tow a Hoofer-owned trailer at any point this fall or winter, then attend this class to get your trailer towing certification! This would include towing a sailboat for lift-out, towing the horse trailer, towing the alpine ski trailer, or possibly towing the outing club canoe trailer. Please note that if someone cannot make this class, other trailer trainings will be offered in the future. Outdoor UW plans on running two trainings each semester. FLEET AUTHORIZATION WITH WISCONSIN HOOFERS IS REQUIRED. If you are fleet authorized with another UW department, you must submit paperwork with our office as well to become fleet authorized with Hoofers. There is no cost for the class. We will meet before the driving demonstration to get started and review the basics. After a short presentation, we will be leaving our meeting location to perform the hands-on portion of the training—dress for being outside.

Previous experience driving a trailer is not required for this training, however, it is helpful as the in-person section doesn't provide much time to practice but instead is mostly meant to demonstrate skills and ability to drive a vehicle with a trailer.

Come learn how to use the Adaptive Kayak at Hoofers. Learn about the different tools and how to use the boat to provide paddling experiences for people with mobility needs and or are nervouse about getting in a kayak.

If the weather permits people may get a chance to paddle the boat so please dress appropriately. 

Meet in the boathouse 

Meet at 5:00PM at the indoor, lower door to Hoofer Boathouse (outside of the Mendota Lodge, across the hallway from the Outdoor UW Office), on the lower level of Memorial Union. 

This is an informal, low-risk setting to practice canoe and kayak rescues in cold(ish) water. We can practice t-rescues of tandem canoes, kayak rolls and re-entries, etc. 

Yes, we will actually get WET and tip over boats in the lake! 

The water temperature will be cold-ish, but not super-cold... it's likely be below 60 degrees F, but not likely to be below 50 (you can check live water temp here: https://uwpd.wisc.edu/services/lake-rescue-safety/). 

Hoofers offers wetsuits and semi-dry paddling tops, which we can put to the test. 

WHAT TO BRING: 

A swimsuit is a good base layer to try beneath a Hoofer wetsuit. 

Bring clothing that you're willing to get wet. Bring the layers you would like to test! Here's a suggested layering scheme: 

• Wicking Base layer against the skin: polypropylene base layers, wool, etc.  

• Close-fitting insulation, could include neoprene 

• Loose-fitting insulation (for instance, a polar fleece); a loose fit will trap air pockets 

• Water resistant or waterproof wind blocker (e.g., dry top or Paddle jacket or dry suit)

Bring closed-toe shoes that will stay on your feet in the water. 

Bring a change of dry clothes, including dry shoes, and a towel for changing.  

If the wind is very strong, or a storm is imminent, this event may be cancelled.

Learn all about the outdoor industry's best practices for camping and traveling in bear country on this Outdoor Explorer Series: Be Bear Aware! course to learn the difference between black and brown bears, how to safely travel in bear county, and more. This course will help provide you with a bear saftey toolkit to make you more confident and safe while traveling in bear country. 

Class Learning Outcomes:

• Spot the difference between the 3 main bears you could see in North America

• Understand where “bear country” is and what bear signs look like 

• Learn how to safely navigate and camp in bear country 

• How to set up a campsite in bear country

• Practice with bear safety tools

Hello (pumpkin emoji)!  Would you like to join our spooooooooooky trip to the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness??  We will get a good mix of fall colors and Lake Superior. Be prepared for very cold weather and the possibility of rain. 

We will leave Friday 10/25 at 7am from Memorial Union, and return the evening of Sunday 10/2. Please do not sign up if you cannot leave Friday 10/25 at 7am.

We will be leading a small trip of 6 total people - 2 leaders (Will and Jace), 1 LIT (Rachel), and 4 participants (COULD BE YOU!!!). 2 slots will be open first come first serve, and two spots will be chosen at random from the waitlist.

There are not any ratings required for this trip, however a COSTUME is MANDATORY.

We will have also have a mandatory pre-trip meeting on October 22nd after the general meeting.

Howdy Hoofers!

We are planning a weekend trip to Garden of the Gods in southern Illinois, located within the Shawnee National Forest!

Itinerary:

We are meeting at 7am on Friday to pack up and drive down to Shawnee National Forest. We will eat lunch and dinner on the road on the way there. We will hike about 2 miles in on Friday night before setting up camp. Saturday we will be hiking about 8 miles. Sunday we will hike out about 3 miles with an option to stop at at waterfall on the way back. Lunch will be on the road.

We will see some cool rock formations and views of the hills, and some beautiful fall colors if we're lucky!

Cost: 

The cost will be $75 per person: $60 paid thru RecHub, and $15 paid via cash/Venmo

The pre-trip meeting will be on October 22nd at 8pm right after the Hoofer Outing general meeting. Please let one of us know if you are unable to attend.

Howdy Shredders!

Owen and I will be leading a mountain biking trip to Copper Harbor, Michigan. Located in the Upper Peninsula on the shores of Lake Superior, the views (hopefully still some fall colors) should be spectacular! The trails in this area are some of the best in the region and unlike anything else in the midwest. They range from intermediate to advanced. This waitlist will open on Tuesday, October 15th at 9pm. The following Sunday, after the last intermediate ride of the week, participants with the required MTB2 rating will be moved to a seperate event to sign up and pay for the event in the order of the waitlist. Assuming the trip is completely full and we use the fleet vehicle we have reserved, expect to pay $80 into RecHub within 24 hours of being moved off of the waitlist. You will need to venmo the trip leaders for gas and the campsite (which unfortunately only takes cash) after the trip. The total amount paid (including venmo) will not exceed $150, and it is expected to be less. Unless we get 2 additional fleet drivers (which is the goal and would open the trip to 5 participants), the trip will be open to 3 participants. If you are fleet certified, you may be given priority to attend this trip. If you have questions about fleet certification, consult hooferleaders.org or the trip leaders. Itinerary:

Friday 2pm: Leave Madison and drive ~6.5hrs to camp in Copper Harbor, MI.

Saturday: Ride all day on the West Bluff trails, continue to camp in Copper Harbor.

Sunday: Ride at East Bluff until noon-ish, drive ~6.5hrs back to Madison.

Note: If the weather and trail conditions do not cooperate, we will camp and ride somewhere other than Copper Harbor. The gales of late fall in this area are no joke. 

There is a required pre-trip meeting on Tuesday 10/22 at 8pm in the leader offices outside the Mendota Lodge of Memorial Union.

Has your brain been a bit unruly recently? Has it been telling you to worry about silly trivial details, like those upcoming midterms, your hectic social life, or that last proof on your math problem set?

Well, we can't help you with those, but we can help you ignore your brain's misguided suggestions. Join us for a weekend of trail building on the John Muir County Park segment of the Ice Age Trail!

After spending all your energy digging perfect backslopes that'll endure through decades of thunderstorms, or constructing sturdy boardwalk that thousands will enjoy, you simply won't have enough energy to worry about the difference between Camus and Sartre. Instead, you'll snuggle cozily into your sleeping bag, stuffed full of free food, and basking in the haze of delightful banter with the most interesting strangers you've ever met; some of those Ice Age Trail volunteers are as old as your grandparents, but still swing picks like they're 20. You'll get your morning started with a beautiful view of the trail segment you just built, rather than the strange squiggles in Euler's formula (e is a letter, not a number). The next weekend, instead of bragging about getitng an A on your test (boring, intangible), you can flex on your friends and family by bringing them to hike the trail you built. Best of all, there'll be no classmates or roommates to remind you of your external obligations!

Sound exciting? You'll join us in leaving from the Memorial Union parking circle at 5pm on Friday night (10/25). We'll drive an hour to John Muir County Park, grab dinner, and set up camp. The next two days, we'll be building trail or otherwise supporting trail-building efforts. On Sunday afternoon, we'll wrap up work around 3pm at the latest, we'll drive back to Memorial Union.

YOU SHOULD BRING:

• Lunch for Saturday/Sunday (I'm personally going to bring a ton of packaged, trail mix-adjacent stuff)
• 2L of water
• Close toed shoes
• Long pants
• Sleeping bag/pad; other personal camping gear, like mess kits, headlamps, and personal hygiene products (we'll bring Hoofers tents)
• Mud/rain boots or personal protective equipment like eye pro, gloves, etc. (if you have them)
• Your best dinosaur impression

Come join us for a day trip to Governor Dodge State Park! We'll do some waterfall spotting, some hiking, some lake viewing and have a fun little fall picnic! Leaves should be PEAKING and it should be a beautiful day.

Cost for the trip is $6 because we are renting a fleet vehicle, and we'll also ask for a couple of dollars through venmo for the personal vehicle we are bringing.

How can educators teach Native American history, culture, and treaty rights in new, engaging ways?  Patty Loew, professor emerita at Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, describes experiential learning approaches that integrate the Four "R"s:  relationship, responsibility, reciprocity, and respect. In particular she focuses on a multimedia canoe project, an Indigenous Tour of Northwestern, and service-learning class trips to the Oneida Reservation.

A citizen of Mashkiiziibiig-- the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe, Dr. Loew is the author of four books, including Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal, now in its second edition; Native People of Wisconsin, which is used by 20,000 Wisconsin school children as a social studies text; and Teachers Guide to Native People of Wisconsin. Her book, Seventh Generation Earth Ethics, won the 2014 Midwest Book Award for Culture. Loew has produced many documentaries for public and commercial television, including the award-winning Way of the Warrior, which aired nationally on PBS in 2007 and 2011. For 20 years, she hosted news and public affairs programs, including WeekEnd and In Wisconsin, for PBS Wisconsin.

Cooking in the Outdoors

The focus of this class is all about planning, preparing, and showing techniques to cook healthy and nutritious meals while on remote backcountry camping trips. We will describe all that goes into executing meals for you and your friends while camping. This includes how to create a plan that provides flexibility for a multi-day camping trip. Shows participants how to set up a stove and walks through the process of cooking a backcountry meal. We also will describe and demonstrate some advanced techniques, such as backcountry baking, using fire for cooking, as well as sharing pro tips for those new to backcountry cooking.

Upon completion of this class, participants will:

• Understand the amount of calories that are being burned during outdoor activities
• Understand the basics micro and macro nutrients used to build a recipe 
• Describe the value of a well rounded nutritious diet that offset energy expenditure
• Envision ways to plan and prepare ration based on the trip and participants 
• Learn about the types cooking supplies needed to cook in the backcountry 
• Learn about ways to cook in the backcountry and practice with cooking tools
